BOMBERS 6 LEEDS 41
BOMBERS DENIED AGAIN
The Bombers finally crashed out of playoff contention as Leeds' speed on D and the efficiency of their offense proved too much for a depleted Lancaster side. The Celtics (alternately known as the Green Snot) came out firing on all cylinders despite Bombers LB Dave 'OPR' Goodall's huge hit on the opening kickoff, but after a 42 yard run from their tailback and with six points looking inevitable on the Lancaster 7 yard line, Bombers CB Gil 'Gillie Beamen' David grabbed an interception in the endzone to get the ball back for the home team. The Lancaster offense stuttered though and were forced to punt, and Leeds capitalised on their next possession as WR Tom Lockard broke several tackles on a 45 yard TD reception. Lancaster RB's 'Sweep' Hailwood and 'Sicknote' Hayward found it tough going on the ground and Leeds got the ball back and once again made Lancaster pay as despite more good play from DB Adam 'Captain Birdseye' Saul their running back rolled in from 5 yards out, with the extra point again successful to make the score 14-0. The Bombers started the second quarter brightly with two huge sacks from DE Boy 'Dutch' de Waart on the harried Leeds QB, but Lancaster’s next drive was quickly ended and Leeds QB Ku was then able to hit WR Lockard for his second TD reception of the day from 25 yards out. Things got worse for Lancaster as the Leeds running back hit the endzone from four yards on their next drive putting the score at a daunting 28-0. However the Bombers refused to give up and mounted a strong drive upfield with Lancaster QB 'Tink' Mayne completing passes to WR David and RB Hailwood, with Hailwood finally sprinting round the outside of a flatfooted Leeds D for a 3 yard TD rush making it 28-6 at halftime. Good play in the third from Lancaster DT Simon 'Russ' Abbott, a great sack from LB Gareth 'Cripple' Naylor and a big hit from LB Mike 'Levettation' Levett soon snuffed out the Celtics' first attack, but the Bombers offense found it hard going despite two great catches including a superb one-handed grab from TE Andy 'Number One' Doran, and punter Mayne was forced to exhibit his skills once more nailing Leeds inside their own five. With Lancaster putting several rookies in on D the Celtics moved the ball more successfully and hit the endzone again after a 20 yard rush from their tailback. Into the fourth and rookie Lancaster CB Billy 'The Kid' Adam grabbed his first ever interception, and with indisciplined Leeds coverage leading to several pass interference penalties the Bombers gained good field position, but were once again denied and the Celtics hit the endzone once again after a 28 yard TD catch, but the extra point was sliced wide to make the final score 41-6.

BOMBERS 6 HULL 12
Once again the Bombers came off feeling hard done by as the Sharks returned victorious to Hull after a classic tight game. Neither side really moved the ball in the first half as D was dominant, with Hull safety Bruce Leatherman getting two of his three interceptions for the day and Bombers defensive MVP Mike Levett making his impression felt (he ended the day with 14 tackles) making plays all over the field. There was controversy as Lancaster QB Chris Mayne completed a 25 yard pass to WR Gil David who got in the endzone for the score, only to have it called back on a dubious offensive pass interference call to leave the score at 0-0 at the end of the first half.

Lancaster came out fired up for the second half but after a Mayne pass was intercepted deep in Bomber territory Hull were finally able to break the up-to-now impenetrable Lancaster defense and RB Simon Eatough ran in up the middle from 20 yards out to open the scoring, only for the PAT to be blocked to leave the score at 6-0. However the Bombers were looking strong and Mayne completed passes to WR’s Hammill, Stranges, David and Pemberton whilst the running of RB’s Flaherty and Tom Hailwood kept the Hull defense on their heels. The Lancaster defense had been monstrous all day though, and thanks to the efforts of DL Boy de Waart and compatriots Flaherty and Levett Hull were forced to the air where DB Andy Achiron grabbed a one-handed pick to win the ball back for the Bombers. With only seconds left on the clock QB Mayne led a drive deep into Shark waters and completed an 8 yard pass to WR Bobby Stranges as time ran out to level the scores and take the game into overtime. Lancaster were looking good and forced Hull to punt but a fumbled return allowed the Sharks to take over on the Bombers’ 15 yard line, and Hull QB Marc Gent was able to roll in from 2 yards out to win the game and shatter Lancaster hopes. Next week though the Bombers will be looking to take out their frustrations on a Sheffield team making the road trip up North, where they will undoubtedly face a Lancaster side determined to improve their record at all costs…
